My Father Never Gave Me the Love I Needed. Now He Wants Me to Leave the Man Who Did.

I’m 21, and I’m in love with a 32-year-old man. Before you judge the age gap, please understand that I didn’t fall for him because he swept me off my feet. I fell for him because, during one of the darkest moments of my life, when I desperately needed my father beside me, he was the person who showed up. Our families already knew each other. My mother called him beta. He respected my parents so much that when I first confessed my feelings, he actually rejected me because he didn’t want to betray their trust. Eventually, he accepted that what I felt was real, and we started a relationship. He told his family about me, and they welcomed me. When my mother said their house wasn’t good enough and wanted them to buy a better one before marriage, he didn’t get offended. He said, “We’ll buy one before your rukhsati. Even if it takes four or five years, I’ll wait.” I thought that kind of patience and respect would matter. Then my father found out.
He didn’t ask whether this man treated me well. He didn’t ask about his character, his work, his family or our plans. He simply said no. When my mother tried discussing it, he threatened to throw both of us out and involve my uncles if the subject was raised again. I have begged my family for just one thing: give me one genuine reason. Tell me something about this man that I’m failing to see, and I will walk away. But the only answer I get is, “Your father doesn’t like him.” And that hurts in a way I can’t explain because I spent so much of my childhood learning not to depend on my father. I started earning while I was still in school because many of my needs weren't being met. I taught students to support myself. I learned very young how to survive without expecting someone to rescue me. Then I finally found someone who made me feel protected, respected and cared for—and suddenly the father whose love I spent years craving gets to decide that I must lose him.
Now the pressure has become even worse. Whenever I try to fight for this relationship, I'm asked, “What if something happens to your mother or father because of you?” Imagine carrying that sentence every day. Imagine being made to feel that choosing the person you love could somehow make you responsible for something happening to your parents. I love my family. I don't want to hurt them. But I also don't understand why loving someone who has treated me well should require sacrificing my entire future. I feel trapped between the people who gave me life and the person who made me feel like my life mattered. Maybe I'm young. Maybe there are things I'm too emotionally involved to see. I'm willing to hear them. But please give me something more than “because your father said no.” If someone respects you, respects your family, earns honestly, is willing to wait years for you and is prepared to meet every reasonable condition your family sets… what exactly is his crime? And if you were me, would you choose your parents’ approval—or risk everything for the person you love?
